Notes From The Pine – 002

An illustration of a coffee table with a notebook on it. The notebook has the text "Notes From The Pine" handwritten on it, along with black andwhite doodles of a football, a football helmet, and a football player. There are beers and crumbs around the notebook.

We’re back for episode 2 of Notes From The Pine. We just watched the Eagles absolutely blow a game on Monday Night Football. Let’s get into some takeaways from week 2 in the NFL.

Takeaways from Thursday Night Football

Buffalo BIlls 31 at Miami Dolphins 10

This feels like weeks ago. How was this only Thursday Night Football. The Bills got out to an early lead they never relented and Tua led with his head. Hope that dude is ok and can keep playing football. Since it seems like he wants to.

Takeaways from Sunday

Did you know the two biggest point spread favorites hadn’t lost in consecutive weeks to start a season since 1980? Well they have now as the Baltimore Ravens fell to 0-2 after dropping a 10 point lead to the Raiders in Baltimore. Did I mention I gave them the kiss of death survivor pick last week?

Meanwhile the Chiefs are 2-0 and potentially Isiah Likely’s toe and a defensive pass interference from being 0-2. It looked like DPI to me. The Chiefs somehow keep squeaking things out. Also from this game just look at this interception.

A clip of a football player making a one handed interception.

Marvin Harrison Jr. rewarded fantasy owners that didn’t read too much into his week 1 performance with 4 catches, 130 yards, and 2 touchdowns. In the first quarter. He finished the day with those numbers, but didn’t need to do much as the Cardinals handled the Rams 41-10. Arizona may be a little spicier in the NFC West than I realized.

Speaking of unexpected teams and conferences, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New Orleans Saints both moved to 2-0. The Saints absolutely destroyed the Cowboys 44-19. Derek Carr opened the season leading 15 straight scoring drives. The Bucs went in to Detroit and gutted out a gritty win. Baker Mayfield also has moves.

The Vikings also came out of nowhere and surprised the San Franciscio 49ers. Is Sam Darnold good? Justin Jefferson taking a pass 97 yards will do that. But check out this ref running out the play.

Other odds and ends:

  • The Packers won at home (their 12th straight home opener win) with Malik Willis at QB. Willis was effective going 12/14 while the Packers ran it 53 times.
  • Jim Harbough’s Chargers trounced the Panthers. The Panthers are real bad.
  • The Bears defense might be really good. They just need Caleb Williams to stay alive and make a few plays.
  • The Commanders beat the giants on 7 fields goals to the Giants 3 touchdowns and 3 failed 2-point conversions. Their kicker went down on the opening kickoff.
  • Aaron Rodgers got in the win column with the Jets over the Titans.
  • Justin FIelds has the Steelers at 2-0. He’s got Chase Daniel as a believer. And this was an amazing throw that got called back for penalty.

Monday Night Football

The Philadelphia Eagles absolutely blew this game. They inexplicably threw it on 3rd down with under a minute left resulting in a Saquan Barkley drop on what would have been a likely first down. This gave the Falcons a free timeout. Though with how fast the Eagles let the Falcons march down the field and score it may not have even mattered. Their defense was playing like I do in Madden when I know the computer is going to score so I just want them to do it faster so I can get the ball back to match.

Back to not knowing which version of the Eagles we’ll have this year. The early season dominant squad or the late season disaster squad.

I’m also not sure what the Falcons will be this season and the NFC South is suddenly looking much tougher than expected. PEach of the teams are spotted 2 wins against Carolina though. So that’s nice for the records.
