Mizzou and Kansas basketball will be reigniting the Border War for an exhibition game to raise money for disaster relief on October 22nd at the Sprint Center. I have to imagine Mizzou’s offseason was a big part in making this happen. It should be a fun game and an early taste of the completely revamped Mizzou basketball squad. It was a week of big homeruns to start things off in the MLB playoffs.

Brian Dozier got things started with a blast to lead off the AL wildcard game. But the Yankees came back to pull out the win thanks in part to a Aaron Judge homer.

Not to be outdone Paul Goldschmidt hit a 3-run bombskie in the bottom of the 1st of the NL Wildcard game. A game that would go on to see 19 runs scored. Continue reading “Notes from the Pine: Playoff Bombskies”

Well, it happened. The St. Louis Cardinals were eliminated from the playoffs. The dream came to an end with a game tying homerun being robbed to seal the deal. That makes the second game tying or go-ahead homerun robbed from the Cardinals in about a month.

It was a season of some ups and longer downs for the St. Louis Cardinals. In the end, the holes on their roster were too big to overcome. Now all that’s left to do is drink. Continue reading “Notes From The Pine: It’s Officially Hockey Season in St. Louis”

Week 2 of the NFL kicks off tomorrow. Make sure to check our picks and probably go against them.

Tommy Pham became the first player to join the 20-20 club for the Cardinals since Reggie Sanders.

Apparently Macho Man Randy Savage played for the Cardinals. He was signed to the minor’s as a catcher out of high school. Continue reading “Notes From The Pine: 20/20 Club”

Notes From The Pine: The Weird Journey of Juan Nicasio

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired Juan Nicasio from the Philadelphia Phillies in one of the weirder post trade deadline deals.

Initially the Pirates placed Juan Nicasio, their second best reliever, on revocable waivers giving National League teams first dibs at claiming him from worst to best.

A “direct competitor” of the Pirates did claim him, but let Pittsburgh no they had no interest in making a deal and only claimed him to block another National League team from acquiring him. It’s not known exactly who that director competitor is, but one would think it was the Brewers or the Cardinals. Perhaps Milwaukee when the Cardinals had passed them in the standings. Notes From the Pine: Mike Leake Traded For Getting Rid of Mike Leake’s Contract

The Cardinals traded Mike Leake out of nowhere Wednesday morning. The deal was all but official by the time rumors started leaking on Twitter that something was in the works.

Leake was sent to the Mariners to be reunited with Marco Gonzalez who was traded to the Mariners back in July. In return the Cardinals received a light-hitting, minor league shortstop by the name of Rayder Ascanio. Last time we talked the Cardinals were hot on the tails of the Cubs for the NL Central division lead. Since then the Cardinals have lost closer Trevor Rosenthal to Tommy John surgery and the bullpen has given up something like 24 runs in 26 innings.

It has been bad. Yet somehow the Cardinals are still only 4.5 games out of first. So if they time their next run of good baseball just right, who knows. Continue reading “Notes From the Pine: Oh No! We Suck Again”

The St. Louis Cardinals are set to play the Pittsburgh Pirates in Williamsport, Pennsylvania this Sunday. Lance Lynn and Randal Grichuk are among the Cardinals to have already played in Williamsport back in their LLWS days.

It should be a battle as the Cardinals look to gain 1.5 games on the Cubs in the NL Central while the Pirates role falls somewhere between spoiler and contention themselves at 5.5 games back.

Let’s hop right into this weeks news and notes from around the sports world. Continue reading “Notes From The Pine: Little League Goes to The Show”

It was a warm August night in St. Louis. One of those Missouri nights that feels great with a breeze but swampy without.

The Cardinals got off to a rough start that day. They fell behind 2-0 only 9 pitches into the game. Mike Leake looked rattled after 3 consecutive pitches were hit for a double, a single, and a single that could have been a double if not for a perfect throw by Dexter Fowler. Early in the week it looked like the St. Louis Cardinals might have turned around their fate thanks to some Instagram based controversy. Without having to can their coach. Not to mention taking 5 of 7 against the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks. Two teams they’re chasing for the wildcard.

And after Rosenthal’s escape artist 6-out save against the Diamondback Friday it looked like maybe the Cardinals would turn a corner and reach .500 and maybe pass it. Continue reading “Notes From the Pine: Throwing Shade”
